Everspace Ships

In EVERSPACE™ we take a more action-focused approach to the core gameplay of a space shooter and combine it with a modern, rogue-like game loop taking you on a challenging journey through an ever-changing, yet beautifully crafted universe full of surprises. The scout ship on Everspace isn't designed to take a ton of punishment. It's very much a hit hard and fast, then get out of dodge type of ship. But I don't like to follow the rules all the time. Sometimes, I like to push it to the limit, riding along the razor's edge if you will.

What I got instead was a crazy control scheme, hard af enemies, & no idea why I was playing it. I uninstalled it after my first firefight when I got overwhelmed immediately after soaring into a battle I was woefully unprepared for.

Today I see the expansion is on sale. I remember I owned the base game & reinstalled it. Upon playing I find I can change the control scheme to something playable. This time I use cover of asteroids, friendly NPC's, & isolating tactics to survive battles. Eventually I'm killed, & those feelings of ire return. As I sit wondering how the game will punish me, I get an achievement.'

Welcome to Everspace'. My ire-turned-confusion turns to a big grin as I realize: This game has an entire posthumous catalog of upgrades & content. The game rewards death as a means of progression! This unconventional take on death is an excellent mechanic reminiscent of such a jewel as Celeste! Extremly rapid/overheats, slow/cooldowns of purpolsion boosts and weapons fire. I will say the environment is nice but does project a false sense of 'open world' freedom. The developer does promise new upgrades rather regularly it seems so the game is constantly changing, although; in minor ways. The voice acting from the pilot is terrible. The AI is decent. The graphics and physics of being in outerspace are pretty nice but theres not a lot of visual diversity that I saw in the hour trial.

Its a roguelike where you are a space fighter pilot. After each run you get an upgrade screen. You salvage weapons, technology. Your cash doesnt roll over, but its done in such a way that feels like incentive to do your best. Theres three ships, each with theyre own upgrade sets.

The flight mechanics are definately space like. If you dont stop early your momentum causes problems. If you boost and let off gas your craft keeps going. The dog fighting is good, the world building is excellent. The game creators nailed it if you ask me.
