It's all a matter of taste: Some old 'radios' can be repurposed / re-designed as 'Steampunk' projects. Many of their parts such as tubes, knobs, dials etc are from the 'Machine Age' with a very 'Industrial' look to them. We may even use a few for some 'Steam Punk' projects around here.

(Click on above thumbnails to enlarge photos) GRUNDIG SIGNAL 700 DX / SHORT-WAVE WORLD AM / FM RADIO
These Grundig Signal 700 analog radios are great performing units. This one, unfortunately has a couple of problems. The volume control will not turn the unit all the way down. It stays pretty loud, even at it's lowest. Secondly the battery compartment door is missing. It still has AC capabilities and comes with the detachable AC cord. Disappearing antenna is in perfect working order, swivels and telescopes to over 2 feet!. Also includes jack on the side panel for connection of a tape deck or turntable via DIN cable. Bands are: LW MW (AM) SW BAND 1 SW BAND 2 FM -- 86.5-108 MHZ There is an 1/8' mini headphone jack. With this feature you can connect the radios' output up to a stereo input, PA, sound system or anything that has an audio input. You could even record from this jack. For AC operation it uses an external power supply (included). For DC (battery) operation it takes 4 X C cells. We have completely gone through the radio cleaning all the controls and contacts and the entire chassis. The radio looks good, and with the exception of the above mentioned volume control issue, works perfectly. We do not have a manual, but it's very straight forward to operate and again does include the AC adaptor.10.25' Wide X 9' Tall X 2. 5' Deep and weighs 4 lbs unpacked. As-Is for repair $39. NEW LISTING 2/16/09 (click on above thumbnails to enlarge photos) warranty PROTON ALARM CLOCK / RADIO PROTON 320 WHITE ALARM CLOCK / HI-FI RADIO Circa 1984-91 SOLD We have gone though this radio inside and out. All audio controls cleaned for static free operation. We also installed a new radio scale dial lamp as any radio from this time period will have this either burned out, or is not long from it. We have not seen a Proton 320 that did not and certainly will not need this done. It's about an hour procedure to change it, so be aware of that if you get one that has it out, otherwise it is difficult to see the tuning scale. Radio fully tests out and all functions perfect. We have actually been using it ourselves for an extended period of time and it always works flawlessly. Radio tunes and sounds great. I worked for a Proton dealer and sold these when they were new. The Proton 320, digital Alarm clock, analog tuner radio. The main strong point on the 320 is it's exceptionally, VERY HIGH QUALITY tuner for reception on both FM & AM bandsand HUGE sound for such a small box. Since it's analog, and Proton quality, it just works! Features; - Analog AM & FM radio tuner - Fluorescent Digital Clock and full readout display - Separate Bass and Treble controls (unheard of on an alarm clock) - 5' full range speaker for 'Hi-Fi' like sound (it really is incredible) - Dual, independent alarm settings allows for two different alarm times and each are selectable between radio or buzzer - Battery backup (standard 9 volt) holds the clock / calendar memory when the power goes out or is disconnected - Auto display dimmer senses room ambient light (works to varying degrees depending on ambient light) The following is excerpted from Protons web site: http://www.proton-usa.com/history.asp.htm 'In 1982, PROTON unveiled its highly acclaimed Table Radio, the P300, better known in the market, as “The Radio,” and its self powered extension speaker, the P301. These sleek, all black products were so unique and provided such good sound that the public quickly embraced them. The Radio received a Consumer Electronics Design and Engineering Award and was named one of Rolling Stone magazine’s top products of the year. 1982 was also the year that PROTON taught the world there was a better way to wake-up in the morning with the introduction of the 320 clock radio, which became known as “The Clock Radio.” Both the 300 and 320 are still benchmarks for the quality consumer as well as the consumer electronics industry.'
I have one of these in white that I use in our kitchen. I listen to a lot of AM talk radio, and it's very difficult to get a modern radio that has even a decent AM tuner in it, let alone sonics that aren't painful to listen to. These Protons WORK! Again, we have completely gone though this radio, including cleaning it to like new condition. Measures 11.5' wide x 5.5' tall x 3.5' deep and weighs 5 lbs unpacked. Includes our standard 90 day limited warranty. Cond. 9 PROTON 320 WHITE SOLD 2/23/10
