Today, I will share with you my knowledge on sea magick, also called sea witchcraft and sea witchery. First, I will explain the principles of sea magick. Then, I will teach you how to start practicing it. Finally, I will share with you my best practice tips.

What is Sea Magick?A Type of Natural MagickSea magick is a type of In this case, the energy source of your spells and rituals is the sea and sometimes other types of water. The possible roots of sea magick could be in the folk legends and superstitions of the sailors from all around the world. Sea witches and sea priestesses also work with entities associated with the sea, such as Deities, spirit animals and water elementals (like mermaids).

Sea magick is neutral, neither good or bad. It is as changing, chaotic and unstable as the sea itself. For this reason, be extra careful while casting a sea spell. Magick always comes with a price and in the case of sea magick, it is particularly true.

A Solitary CraftUnlike most magickal traditions, sea magick is a solitary craft. You don’t find “sea covens” easily. Therefore, sea magick is not unified. There is no good or wrong way of doing things since nothing is set in stone. Likewise, you can’t be initiated by another witch.

You must do it yourself. Thus, sea witchery is not for beginners. It requires a high level of and experience. YOU make your OWN craft. Sea Witches and Sea PriestessesPractitioners of sea magick call themselves sea witches or sea priestesses. Sea witches are more inclined towards spellcasting and traditional witchcraft and they’re not necessarily religious.

On the other hand, sea priestesses are more like shamans. Meditation and journeying are essential to their practice. They don’t cast spells very often, but when they do, they ask the help of their spirit guides, may they be spirit animals, elementals or sea deities.

Their practice is more devotional than magickal. For my part, I am more a sea priestess than a sea witch, but I will try to represent both sides of the craft as much as I can. How to Start Sea WitcheryAnswer the CallI wrote in previous articles that everybody can become a or a. I still think that it’s true. However, everyone is not given the same set of skills and gifts. As a witch, you probably feel more attracted to some types of magick than others.

It’s totally normal. You can’t do everything at once. We all have our own style and our own craft.

Hence, you don’t become a sea witch. You just realize that you are one. But how do you know?

If you have always felt compelled by the sea, if you could spend a whole day watching the ebb and flow of the tide, if going to the sea on vacation feels like coming home, if you are in love with seashells or if you secretly wished you were a mermaid, you know that it’s your place. Don’t overthink it. Just answer the call.

You Can’t Learn Sea Witchery in the BooksSea witchery is meant to be lived. You must experiment it to truly understand what it is about. Of course, there are a few books that can guide you in the right direction. But if you just read the theory, you won’t truly understand. You can’t learn sea witchery without experimenting. Connect With the SeaYou don’t need to live by the sea to be a sea witch or a sea priestess.

However, before you start practicing sea magick, you need to establish a connection. It is way easier to do while being in the sea for real. So if you don’t live on the seashore, go to the beach in your next vacation. You can still prepare yourself with visualisation and meditation, but your connection won’t be as effective if you don’t dedicate yourself to the sea first.

Sea DedicationDedicating yourself to the sea is a good way to establish a connection between you and the forces of the ocean. To learn more about dedications, I recommend doing it in the real ocean. It has no comparison. I dedicated myself to sea witchcraft when I went to Mexico on vacation. I stepped into the Pacific Ocean and I performed the Ninefold Sea Blessing from the book.

It’s been a very powerful experience. To truly dedicate yourself, add another part to the prayer. After you received the sea blessing, clearly state that you are dedicating yourself to the Ocean. Using your own words will make it even more powerful. Don’t forget to write it down for future reference.

Practice TipsThe Tools of Sea WitcheryTo practice sea witchery, you don’t need a lot of tools. Sea witches always use what the ocean gives them. As you can see in the list below, almost any can be replaced by something from the sea. So, if you plan to do a ritual on the beach, don’t bring anything except your book of tides and some candles.

Tool Substitutions. Altar Tile: A big flat rock. Athame: A pointy rock or your hands. Cauldron/Chalice/Offering Bowl: Big seashells such as clamshells. Incense burner: Abalone shellNow, here’s a list of things that you should always have with you when you go on the seashore. Always keep small containers on hand to collect sand and sea water.

RopeThe Book of TidesIf you stumble across the term “book of tides” during your studies, don’t worry. It’s the same thing than a: a journal where you record your knowledge, your spells and all your magickal experiments.

The only difference is that it is specifically meant for sea witchcraft. For my part, I don’t even have a book of tides. Since I do not practice exclusively sea magick, I use my book of shadows for all my spiritual practices.

The Sea AltarHaving a sea altar at home is very useful. It is a good way to maintain your connection with the sea everyday. It’s the same idea than setting a regular altar. For guidelines, read The only difference is that you will replace all the regular wiccan tools with gifts from the sea such as seashells, sand dollars, jetsam, sea deities representations, and anything that makes you think about the sea. Since I came back from Mexico, I completely rebuilt my altars. I removed almost all my wiccan tools and now my two altars reflect my love for the sea. Always Leave an OfferingWhen you go on the beach, ALWAYS leave an offering, whether you are performing a spell or simply collecting things.

The ocean and the sea spirits are very capricious, and they will expect to get something in exchange for their help. If you don’t give something willingly, they will take something of their choosing among what you have with you and you will not like it. For example, one day I was making sea witch bottles and one of my thongs has been caught by the tide.

Since that day, I learned my lesson! However, your offering doesn’t need to be big or complicated. When I collect seashells, I always make a small altar on the sand using the things that I find. When I go, I leave a part of it there to show my gratitude. It can be as simple as that!

For Landlocked Sea WitchesBeing landlocked means that you don’t live near of the sea. It doesn’t mean that you can’t perform sea magick! Water is all around you, so it doesn’t matter. Any water point in your area can be used as a source of energy for your spells. Another option is to use visualisation. Create your own sea sanctuary in your mind’s eyes and visit it to perform your spells and rituals.

This is something that I do a lot. Besides, if you need salt water for a ritual or spell but you don’t have it, you can always make some. Mix source water with sea salt, and there you go!

Sea Tides CorrespondencesJust like all tides have a specific energy. Perform your spells and rituals at the best time for enhanced results. Flow: when the tide is coming in.

Focus: attract, bring something new, create. Positive magick. High tide: every twelve hours.
